Three Maintenance Tips for the Holidays

The holidays are around the corner, which means that you probably have a lengthy holiday checklist. From decorating your home to making your favorite treats to buying gifts for your loved ones, you will be plenty busy these next few months.

One thing that could disrupt your holiday gameplan is a broken appliance. An oven that stops working abruptly, a fridge that turns off suddenly, and a stove that won’t heat could impact your plans and your festivities, creating not-so-jolly memories. Lucky for you, we’ve compiled three maintenance tips for the holidays to ensure that your celebrations run as expected. Let’s dive in.

Step 1: Deep Clean Your Appliances

Our first maintenance tip for the holidays is to clean your most-used appliances. Cleaning your appliances does more than keep them shiny and bright: It prevents them from breaking and helps you decipher if there are any issues that need to be addressed. In a survey of more than 381,000 appliances, Consumer Reports calculated that 6 percent of respondents reported problems with cooking elements not lighting or heating up on ranges, 5 percent of people reported refrigerators that didn’t cool properly, and 11 percent of people said their dishwashers stopped properly cleaning.

What’s the best way to clean those items? We are glad you asked!

  • Pull out the fridge and take care of any dust buildup you find. Be sure to clean out the dust from the mechanical coils .
  • Wipe off your oven and stove top and check that all elements or gas burners heat and ignite fully.
  • Place a single dishwasher-safe cup of white vinegar on the top rack of your dishwater and run a full cycle.

Step 2: Perform a Cooking Test

Maybe you haven’t used your appliances in a while, or maybe you have. Regardless, you should still perform a cooking test run a few weeks prior to your big holiday celebration. This second maintenance tip for the holidays will allow you to know far in advance if you need something repaired or not.

So pull out your favorite recipes. Make that lasagna recipe you have been dying to try, whip up a rich chocolate cake just because, or bake a loaf of sweet bread for a late-morning treat to eat with your coffee. When you are finished, load everything up in the dishwasher and check the dishes to make sure they all come out clean once the load is finished.

If you follow this holiday home maintenance tip, appliance issues won’t catch you by surprise.
